Ident Animation (Final Cut Pro/Photoshop):

Friday 9 June 2017

1) Through our suite of idents, our group intended on promoting the enrichment that takes place every academic year at the college, on the Christ The King YouTube channel, using live action and animation. The enrichment includes activities such as sport, dance, art, etc. We wanted to give our intended target audience a true visual image of what takes place at our college, indicating the fact that our college is a place where we allow every individual to manifest their gifts and talents. Every academic year, a talent show takes place, a fashion show, a collegiate day, which is a day consisting of sport activities, etc. We felt as if doing this would have been more of a success, trying to attract the target audience, instead of just promoting the core subjects, such as Maths, English and Science. Also, we want our intended audience to look at our college as a college that is different from every other college. For example, making the audience that we're targeting know that we're different from North West Kent. For example, North West Kent is more of a secular college, whereas Christ The King is a college that welcomes belief.

Through our suite of idents, apart from attracting the audience, we also intended to nail consistency across all idents. We were intending that the audience will recognise the idents as a suite of idents. In order to accomplish this, we had to make sure that the idents all consisted of the same things, such as colour, animation.

2) Our group set out to successfully achieve various things, such as making sure that our idents were recognisable, also that we successfully did everything we could to make sure that our suite of idents appealed to our target audience, etc. In order to achieve these various things that our group set out to do, in terms of making sure that the ident was recognisable, we went out to find out how it would have been easy for the audience to look at the idents, and instantly recognise that it was Christ The King's channel we were promoting. So we looked at things like colours, which was White and Purple. We found this out as these are the colours used in the logo, they are the colours used on the uniform for the ambassadors, etc. So therefore, we decided to use the same colours in our idents in subtle ways, which was the animation, as you will either see white and purple splashes, lines moving about, and other forms of animation. Also, with regards to making sure that the ident successfully appealed to its target audience, we made sure that the characters used in the idents were around the same age of the people we were targeting. As we were targeting students between the ages of 16-18,  we made sure that in all our idents, we used people between these age groups.

3) I was the Director Of Photography for the idents. So my job was to make sure that for the dents, everything was filmed in the way it was supposed to be filmed, draw and demonstrated on the storyboard). Also, due to my ability to use various software for editing, such as Final Cut Pro and Photoshop, my duty was to go hand-in-hand with another member from my group with the editing after the ident was filmed. So after the ident was filmed, I edited the footage on Final Cut Pro. However, this was only done for one ident out of the four in total. However, with the animation, I helped in this area with two of the idents. This was done on Photoshop, as I found it easier than After Effects and Premiere. Another duty that was given to me was to act in some of the idents. I was given the responsibility to act in the basketball ident, simply because it was my idea, and we all agreed that since I knew all the choreography, movement and positioning for the ident, it would make sense if I acted in the ident. I also acted in the studio ident. I played the role of an student using the studio for personal music, making it known that the college provides that sort of opportunity. Another general duty that I carried out was simply just to develop ideas. So, if a member was to come up with an idea, I just had the duty to develop ideas to make the idea more creative.

4) The process of responding to the brief as a group was somewhat successful. There were a few altercations we came across, as the thing that held us back at times was our organisations. Although this wasn't the majority of the time, but our lack of organisation included things like not booking locations as we were supposed to, for example, we were supposed to use the school gym on a day we were supposed to shoot, but we happened to just turn up at the location and expect to shoot straight away, without booking the location in advance, even though it was in our college. As a result, we had to book and wait for a few days before we could then use the location. This resulted in our group having less time to properly shoot the ident, even though we got it in the end, but we were less flexible as we had to race against time, and we also had less time to edit the ident on both Final Cut Pro, and Photoshop. Again, we got there in the end, as a result of racing against time. Another element of organisation that our group slacked in was our attendance. At times, members of the group didn't turn up to carry out their role, whether it was to shoot, to edit, to direct, etc. Although at times, valid excuses were provided, this put a burden on the one or two individuals that were turning up all the time to carry out their role. Consequently, the one or two individuals that turned up had to make sure they carried out their role, whilst having to make sure they substituted the individuals that didn't turn up. The point in which we started to pull our weight, and productively spend our time was towards the deadline, as we were able to get more idents filmed, edited, etc.

Another area we sort of slacked in was our pre production, our planning. This was simply as a result of members of the group not being 100% sure which duty was theirs, so there was a mix up at times. However, once everyone was clear on what they had to do, and became aware of the importance of getting the planning done in time, everyone completed what they had to do in time.

5) We didn't necessarily have to make changes resulting from ethical constraints. We just promoted the college as it is ( with subtlety), which is a Christian/Catholic college. We just had to make sure that we didn't make the college look as if they discriminated other races, such as the Muslim race. To avoid this, we made sure that we didn't show too much of the sign of the cross, as it may look to the audience as if we're a ChristianCatholic college, without acknowledging the fact that there may be people from other races that attend the college. With regards to the unforeseen challenges, one of the members from our group came up with an idea for one of the idents for the entire suite. The ident was filmed and edited on Final Cut Pro. So therefore, the ident was ready to be animated. However, towards the deadline for the suite of dents, one of the members from our group noticed a problem and shared it with the rest of the group, and the problem was that, out of all the idents, the newspaper ident wouldn't have made sense being part of the suite of idents, as there was no correlation in comparison to the other idents. As a result, we decided just in time to come up with another idea for the ident, so that there could be more of a correlation with the other idents. We managed to sort the situation out in time.

Constraints (Legal, Ethical, Regulatory)

As a group, we were commissioned to write a reflective article with detailed explanations of how and why the following below need to be taken into account.

Copyright:
The Copyright Act is a UK copyright law from 1998, which gives the originators of musical, artistic and dramatic material the right to control the way in which others use their material.

Copyright is an essential thing, which would need to be taken into account. It is the legal right to use certain material, and the reason why our group would need to consider this is because, if we were to use certain material without the given permission from the originator, the originator could then take legal actions against our group. Copyright could include material such as music, the logo for, the college, etc. In order to avoid this, we will have to make sure that we have permissions to use any sort of audio material from the originator, and with regards to the logo, we will have to make sure that the college is aware that the logo will be displayed on-screen.

Use of under 18s in the video:
The Children Act 1989 is an act from 1989, ensuring that the children are safely guarded and that their welfare is promoted by parents, organizations, etc.

Use of under 18s in the group we would need to consider as a group. This would require our group to carefully organize when we are going to shoot; paying close attention to things such as time and location. This would need to be considered because since the people that will be participating in the video will be under the age of 18, there will be a limited amount of time in which they will be legally allowed to work. In order to work around this limitation, we will need to make sure that we have a rough idea at least, if not a set idea, of which days which ident is going to be recorded, how long it is going to take to record each ident, and have a contingency plan, in case we would have to come back to a previous ident to re-shoot and improve that ident.

Discrimination of Ethnicity:
The Equality Act 201o is an act that stops the act of people being treated unfairly as a result of their age, gender, ethnicity, religion, etc.

Discrimination of Ethnicity is a thing we would have to consider as a group. This sort of thing has to do with disregarding or nationalities. We would need to consider this because if we were to include certain nationalities, and discriminate others, people within the nationality discriminated could take racist offence. To avoid this, we would have to incorporate ideas that gives the impression to the audience that everybody is welcome, and no ethnicity is disregarded.

Gender:
Gender is another thing our group we will have to consider, being careful that we are not promoting just the masculine aspects/events that take place at the college, likewise with the feminine aspects/events that take place at the college as well. The reason why we would have to consider this is because we wouldn’t want the audience we’re targeting to get the impression that we provide enrichment activities for one gender over the other. It is likely and completely normal that a certain activity could attract a certain gender in comparison to the other, such as dance, which could mainly attract the females, but in order to make it look as if we consider everyone, as well as promoting the feminine aspects, it is essential that we promote the masculine sort of activities as well, such as football, basketball, etc.

Religious Belief:

The Equality Act 201o is an act that stops the act of people being treated unfairly as a result of their age, gender, ethnicity, religion, etc.

Lastly, religious belief is another thing we would have to consider as a group. Again, this is as important as the discrimination of ethnicity. Although the college is called ‘Christ The King’, we will still have to be careful that we are not giving an impression to the audience that we pay attention only to the Christian/Catholic race, but that we also welcome people from other religions, such as Muslim.

Reflective Diary

17th April

Meeting Deadlines:
At point point, we hadn't started to produce our idents. At this point, we were generating ideas and putting together our production plan, so we knew what softwares we were going to use, how much it was all going to cost, where we were going to film, etc.

Quality Management:

My first time of meeting with the client, the client went through what the purpose of the ident was for the college. He outlined what he wanted, and after that, we discussed how we were going to make the ident look and also went through the importance of incorporating creativity into the ident, as it is a younger audience that we are targeting. We told the client what colours were going to be used, and he was in agreement, as it was the two colours that the college is recognised by (Purple and white). He agreed with the majority of our ideas, but his vision of how the ident was going to look didn't include much creativity. In other words, the discussion then became a negotiation, because we had to negotiate ideas.

Team Working:
Within our group, we were working well together. Although, there were a few cases where within three lessons in a week, some of us we absent for various reasons. Therefore, the people that were coming in had to carry the responsibilities of those that weren't coming in on top of their own duty.

24th April Meeting Deadlines:
There were issues where our production plan wasn't to the standard that it should have been. One of the problems was that it didn't have a front cover, and some of the things we spoke about weren't fully covered in full detail.

Quality Management:
Our second diary: Our group pitched our ideas in the Mac suite of how the ident was going to look. My idea was incorporating the CTK ethos into the ident, which is the CTK 'graces'. My idea was having each letter in graces appearing on screen, and then having footage for each letter appearing which would represent that letter. Eg. 'G' in graces is short for grit, so I was going to have the letter 'G' appear on screen with grit written underneath, and then after have footage that relates to grit and being courageous. Although it was a good idea, using my idea would have seemed as if I was making an advert for the college, and not an ident, because I would have been promoting the college and the learning that takes place, and not the content of the college channel. Therefore, I had to come up with a new idea, promoting the enrichment that takes place at the college, and not use the idea of promoting the college.

Team Working:
At this point, our teamwork was at the same state as it was the first time. We were working well together. We weren't getting frustrated at each other, but still, there were issues where some of us were not coming in, and this was a burden on those that were coming in because they had to carry out extra responsibilities. However, at this point, a small group discussion was held where we said that we were each going to try and get rid of this situation that was delaying our group.

1st June

Meeting Deadlines:
In terms of meeting with the deadline, at this point, we were slightly falling behind, however, we weren't too behind. This was with regards to our written work.

Quality Management:
Our group completely changed our ideas
